Transition can be hard
The start of a new school year can be difficult for many reasons:
Humans are creatures of habit
School transition can disrupt friendships and relationships with school staff
Fear of the unknown
Separation from parents
DONT…
Dismiss any worries or concerns, even if you think they are silly
Avoid things that make your child anxious, it might feel like a quick fix but it does not resolve the anxiety.
Anxiety and coping
Instead…
Let your child ask lots of questions and answer them as openly as possible.
Use your wise mind
Remind them of other successful firsts
Praise and acknowledge good behaviour and bravery
As a parent, model the behaviour you wish to see in your child
Help from school
What to do in more serious situations:
Ask for a shorter day, and gradually increase time in school
Ask for a safe/quiet place your child can go to reduce anxiety
Ask for a trusted staff member to assist your child on the way into school, and in times of anxiety.
